VOLCANO n.
A mountain or hill, usually more or less conical in form, from which lava, cinders, steam, sulphur gases, and the like, are ejected; -- often popularly called a burning mountain.
ACTIVE a.
opposed to quiescent, dormant, or extinct; as, active laws; active hostilities; an active volcano.
ASHES n.
r Volcanic ash, the loose, earthy matter, or small fragments of stone or lava, ejected by volcanoes.
CINDER n.
The slag of a furnace, or scoriaceous lava from a volcano. Cinder frame, a framework of wire in front of the tubes of a locomotive, to arrest the escape of cinders. -- Cinder notch (Metal.), the opening in a blast furnace, through which melted cinder flows out.
CLINKER n.
grate or furnace where anthracite coal in used; vitrified or burnt matter ejected from a volcano; slag.

CRATER n.
The basinlike opening or mouth of a volcano, through which the chief eruption comes; similarly, the mouth of a gevser, about which a cone of silica is often built up.

Matter ejected; material thrown out; as, the ejecta of a volcano; the ejecta, or excreta, of the body.

LAVA n.
The melted rock ejected by a volcano from its top or fissured sides. It flows out in streams sometimes miles in length. It also issues from fissures in the earth's surface, and forms beds covering many square miles, as in the Northwestern United States.
MOYA n.
Mud poured out from volcanoes during eruptions; -- so called in South America.
OBSIDIAN n.
A kind of glass produced by volcanoes. It is usually of a black color, and opaque, except in thin splinters.
SALSE n.
A mud volcano, the water of which is often impregnated with salts, whence the name.
SLAG n.
The scoria of a volcano. Slag furnace, or Slag hearth (Metal.), a furnace, or hearth, for extracting lead from slags or poor ore. -- Slag wool, mineral wool. See under Mineral.
STREAM n.
rom the earth in streams; a stream of molten lead from a furnace; a stream of lava from a volcano.
VESUVIAN a.
Of or pertaining to Vesuvius, a volcano near Naples.
