TUNICATA n.
A grand division of the animal kingdom, intermediate, in some respects, between the invertebrates and vertebrates, and by some writers united with the latter. They were formerly classed with acephalous mollusks. The body is usually covered with a firm external tunic, consisting in part of cellulose, and having two open…
ACEPHALA n.
oysters; -- so called because they have no evident head. Formerly the group included the Tunicata, Brachiopoda, and sometimes the Bryozoa. See Mollusca.
APPENDICULARIA n.
A genus of small free-swimming Tunicata, shaped somewhat like a tadpole, and remarkable for resemblances to the larvæ of other Tunicata. It is the type of the order Copelata or Larvalia. See Illustration in Appendix.

One of the Ascidioidea, or in a more general sense, one of the Tunicata. Also as an adj.
ASCIDIOIDEA n.
A group of Tunicata, often shaped like a two-necked bottle. The group includes, social, and compound species. The gill is a netlike structure within the oral aperture. The integument is usually leathery in texture. See Illustration in Appendix.
ASCIDIUM n.
of the known species. It is sometimes used as a name for the Ascidioidea, or for all the Tunicata.
CHORDATA n.
A comprehensive division of animals including all Vertebrata together with the Tunicata, or all those having a dorsal nervous cord.
DESMOMYARIA n.
The division of Tunicata which includes the Salpæ. See Salpa.
ENDOSTYLE n.
A fold of the endoderm, which projects into the blood cavity of ascidians. See Tunicata.
LARVALIA n.
An order of Tunicata, including Appendicularia, and allied genera; -- so called because certain larval features are retained by them through life. Called also Copelata. See Appendicularia.
NUCLEUS n.
A visceral mass, containing the stomach and other organs, in Tunicata and some mollusks.
OVICYST n.
The pouch in which incubation takes place in some Tunicata.
PHARYNGOPNEUSTA n.
A group of invertebrates including the Tunicata and Enteropneusta. -- Pha*ryn`gop*neus"tal, a.
SEA SQUIRT n.
