SULPHIDE n.
A binary compound of sulphur, or one so regarded; -- formerly called sulphuret. Double sulphide (Chem.), a compound of two sulphides. -- Hydrogen sulphide. (Chem.) See under Hydrogen. -- Metallic sulphide, a binary compound of sulphur with a metal.
BISULPHIDE n.
A sulphide having two atoms of sulphur in the molecule; a disulphide, as in iron pyrites, FeS2; -- less frequently called bisulphuret.
DISULPHIDE n.
r containing two atoms of sulphur in each molecule; -- formerly called disulphuret. Cf. Bisulphide.
HYDROSULPHIDE n.
One of a series of compounds, derived from hydrogen sulphide by the replacement of half its hydrogen by a base or basic radical; as, potassium hydrosulphide, KSH. The hydrosulphides are analogous to the hydrates and include the mercaptans.
MONOSULPHIDE n.
A sulphide containing one atom of sulphur, and analogous to a monoxide; -- contrasted with a Ant: polysulphide; as, galena is a monosulphide.
OXYSULPHIDE n.
A ternary compound of oxygen and sulphur.
PERSULPHIDE n.
A sulphide containing more sulphur than some other compound of the same elements; as, iron pyrites is a persulphide; -- formerly called persulphuret.
POLYSULPHIDE n.
A sulphide having more than one atom of sulphur in the molecule; -- contrasted with monosulphide.
PROTOSULPHIDE n.
That one of a series of sulphides of any element which has the lowest proportion of sulphur; a sulphide with but one atom of sulphur in the molecule.
SESQUISULPHIDE n.
A sulphide, analogous to a sesquioxide, containing three atoms of sulphur to two of the other ingredient; -- formerly called also sesquisulphuret; as, orpiment, As2S3 is arsenic sesquisulphide.
SUBSULPHIDE n.
A nonacid compound consisting of one equivalent of sulphur and more than one equivalent of some other body, as a metal.
TERSULPHIDE n.
A trisulphide.
TRISULPHIDE n.
A sulphide containing three atoms of sulphur.
AMPHID n.
class formed by the combination of an acid and a base, or by the union of two oxides, two sulphides, selenides, or tellurides, as distinguished from a haloid compound. [R.] Berzelius.
ARGENTITE n.
Sulphide of silver; -- also called vitreous silver, or silver glance. It has a metallic luster, a lead-gray color, and is sectile like lead.

Whence many a bursting stream auriferous plays. Thomson. ~= pyrites, iron pyrites (iron disulphide), containing some gold disseminated through it.
BELL METAL n.
of about three parts of copper to one of tin; -- used for making bells. Bell metal ore, a sulphide of tin, copper, and iron; the mineral stannite.
BERTHIERITE n.
A double sulphide of antimony and iron, of a dark steel-gray color.
BI; BI- n.
or that such constituent is present in double the ordinary proportion; as, bichromate, bisulphide. Be- and di- are often used interchangeably.
BISMUTHINE; BISMUTHINITE n.
Native bismuth sulphide; -- sometimes called bismuthite.
