SCARP n. 4 definitions
The slope of the ditch nearest the parapet; the escarp.
ESCARP n. 2 definitions
The side of the ditch next the parapet; -- same as scarp, and opposed to counterscarp.

The coping of the scarp wall, which projects beyong the face of the wall a few inches.
COUNTERSCARF n.
he ditch, with its parapet and glacis; as, the enemy have lodged themselves on the counterscarp.
COVERED a.
exposed; hidden. Covered way (Fort.), a corridor or banquette along the top of the counterscarp and covered by an embankment whose slope forms the glacis. It gives the garrisonn an open line of communication around the works, and a standing place beyond the ditch. See Illust. of Ravelin.
ESPLANADE n.
The glacis of the counterscarp, or the slope of the parapet of the covered way toward the country.
GRAFFAGE n.
The scarp of a ditch or moat. "To clean the graffages." Miss Mitford.
MAGISTRAL a.
mined. It is usually the crest line of the parapet in fieldworks, or the top line of the escarp in permanent fortifications.
RAVELIN n.
two embankments with make a salient angle. It is raised before the curtain on the counterscarp of the place. Formerly called demilune and half-moon.
RELAIS n.
A narrow space between the foot of the rampart and the scarp of the ditch, serving to receive the earth that may crumble off or be washed down, and prevent its falling into the ditch. Wilhelm.
VANFESS n.
A ditch on the outside of the counterscarp, usually full of water.
