RECTUM n.
The terminal part of the large intestine; -- so named because supposed by the old anatomists to be straight. See Illust. under Digestive.
LATUS RECTUM n.
The line drawn through a focus of a conic section parallel to the directrix and terminated both ways by the curve. It is the parameter of the principal axis. See Focus, and Parameter.
MESORECTUM n.
The fold of peritoneum, or mesentery, attached to the rectum. -- Mes`o*rec"tal, a.
BIRTHROOT n.
An herbaceous plant (Trillium erectum), and its astringent rootstock, which is said to have medicinal properties.
COLON n.
That part of the large intestines which extends from the cæcum to the rectum.

A disease attended with inflammation and ulceration of the colon and rectum, and characterized by griping pains, constant desire to evacuate the bowels, and the discharge of mucus and blood.

Of or pertaining to the rectum; rectal; as, the hemorrhoidal arteries, veins, and nerves.

A small nematoid worm (Oxyurus vermicularis), which is parasitic chiefly in the rectum of man. It is most common in children and aged persons.
PROCTITIS n.
Inflammation of the rectum.
PROCTOCELE n.
Inversion and prolapse of the mucous coat of the rectum, from relaxation of the sphincter, with more or less swelling; prolapsus ani. Dunglison.
PROCTOTOMY n.
An incision into the rectum, as for the division of a stricture.
