POLARIZE v.
To communicate polarity to.
POLARIZER n.
That which polarizes; especially, the part of a polariscope which receives and polarizes the light. It is usually a reflecting plate, or a plate of some crystal, as tourmaline, or a doubly refracting crystal.
DEPOLARIZE v. 2 definitions
To deprive of polarity; to reduce to an unpolarized condition.
DEPOLARIZER n.
A substance used to prevent polarization, as upon the negative plate of a voltaic battery.
DEPOLARIZATION n.
The act of depriving of polarity, or the result of such action; reduction to an unpolarized condition. Depolarization of light (Opt.), a change in the plane of polarization of rays, especially by a crystalline medium, such that the light which had been extinguished by the analyzer reappears as if the polarization had b…
DEXTRO- n.
having the property of turning the plane of polarized light to the right; as, dextrotartaric acid.
INACTIVE a.
Not active; inert; esp., not exhibiting any action or activity on polarized light; optically neutral; -- said of isomeric forms of certain substances, in distinction from other forms which are optically active; as, racemic acid is an inactive tartaric acid.
INTERFERENCE n.
he figures observed when certain sections of crystallized bodies are viewed in converging polarized light; thus, a section of a uniaxial crystal, cut normal to the vertical axis, shows a series of concentric colored rings with a single black cross; -- so called because produced by the interference of luminous waves. -…
ISOCHROMATIC a.
e color, as lines drawn through certain points in experiments on the chromatic effects of polarized light in crystals.
ISOMERISM n.
and the same ultimate constitution), are yet physically different, as in their action on polarized light, as dextro- and lævo-tartaric acids. In such compounds there is usually at least one unsymmetrical carbon atom. See Unsymmetrical.
MALIC a.
ncentration. An artificial variety is a derivative of succinic acid, but has no action on polarized light, and thus malic acid is a remarkable case of physical isomerism.
MALTOSE n.
c ferment of saliva and pancreatic juice. It resembles dextrose, but rotates the plane of polarized light further to the right and possesses a lower cupric oxide reducing power.
POLARIMETER n.
An instrument for determining the amount of polarization of light, or the proportion of polarized light, in a partially polarized ray.
POLARISCOPE n.
An instrument consisting essentially of a polarizer and an analyzer, used for polarizing light, and analyzing its properties.
POLARITY n.
ite parts of a magnet, the dissimilar phenomena corresponding to the different sides of a polarized ray of light, etc.
POLARIZATION n.
The act of polarizing; the state of being polarized, or of having polarity.
PRISM n.
e field by total reflection from the internal cemented surface, and the extraordinary, or polarized, image alone is transmitted.
RAY n.
ting point; a single element of light or heat propagated continuously; as, a solar ray; a polarized ray.
RHOMB n.
within the rhomb, at other faces, two reflections. It is used to produce a ray circularly polarized from a plane-polarized ray, or the reverse. Nichol.
RONTGEN RAY n.
s by their discoverer, W. K. Röntgen. They also ionize gases, but cannot be reflected, or polarized, or deflected by a magnetic field. They are regarded as nonperiodic, transverse pulses in the ether. They are used in examining opaque objects, as for locating fractures or bullets in the human body.
