PHARYNX n.
The part of the alimentary canal between the cavity of the mouth and the esophagus. It has one or two external openings through the nose in the higher vertebrates, and lateral branchial openings in fishes and some amphibias.
EPIPHARYNX n.
A structure which overlaps the mouth of certain insects.
HYPOPHARYNX n.
An appendage or fold on the lower side of the pharynx, in certain insects.

FAUCES n.
The narrow passage from the mouth to the pharynx, situated between the soft palate and the base of the tongue; -- called also the isthmus of the fauces. On either side of the passage two membranous folds, called the pillars of the fauces, inclose the tonsils.
GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL a.
Pertaining to both the tongue and the pharynx; -- applied especially to the ninth pair of cranial nerves, which are distributed to the pharynx and tongue. -- n. One of the glossopharyngeal nerves.
