OXIDE n.
nd of oxygen with an atom or radical, or a compound which is regarded as binary; as, iron oxide, ethyl oxide, nitrogen oxide, etc.
BINOXIDE n.
Same as Dioxide.
CARBOXIDE n.
mpound of carbon and oxygen, as carbonyl, with some element or radical; as, potassium carboxide. Potassium carboxide, a grayish explosive crystalline compound, C6O6K, obtained by passing carbon monoxide over heated potassium.
DEUTOXIDE n.
lecule two atoms of oxygen united with some other element or radical; -- usually called dioxide, or less frequently, binoxide.
DINOXIDE n.
Same as Dioxide.

An oxide containing two atoms of oxygen in each molecule; binoxide.
HYDROXIDE n.
A hydrate; a substance containing hydrogen and oxygen, made by combining water with an oxide, and yielding water by elimination. The hydroxides are regarded as compounds of hydroxyl, united usually with basic element or radical; as, calcium hydroxide ethyl hydroxide.
HYPEROXIDE n.
A compound having a relatively large percentage of oxygen; a peroxide. [Obs.]
MONOXIDE n.
An oxide containing one atom of oxygen in each molecule; as, barium monoxide.
PARADOXIDES n.
A genus of large trilobites characteristic of the primordial formations.
PENTOXIDE n.
An oxide containing five atoms of oxygen in each molecule; as, phosphorus pentoxide, P2O5.
PEROXIDE n.
An oxide containing more oxygen than some other oxide of the same element. Formerly peroxides were regarded as the highest oxides. Cf. Per-, 2.
PROTOXIDE n.
That one of a series of oxides having the lowest proportion of oxygen. See Proto-, 2 (b). protoxide of nitrogen, laughing gas, now called hyponitrous oxideNO. See under Laughing.
QUADROXIDE n.
A tetroxide. [R.]
SESQUIOXIDE n.
An oxide containing three atoms of oxygen with two atoms (or radicals) of some other substance; thus, alumina, Al2O3 is a sesquioxide.
SUBOXIDE n.
An oxide containing a relatively small amount of oxygen, and less than the normal proportion; as, potassium suboxide, K4O.

TETROXIDE n.
An oxide having four atoms of oxygen in the molecule; a quadroxide; as, osmium tetroxide, OsO.
TRIOXIDE n.
An oxide containing three atoms of oxygen; as, sulphur trioxide, SO3; -- formerly called tritoxide.
