HEBREW n. 3 definitions
he line of Jacob; an Israelite; a Jew. There came one that had escaped and told Abram the Hebrew. Gen. xiv. 13.

= Jewish calendar.
HEBREWESS n.
An Israelitish woman.
ABECEDARIAN; ABECEDARY a.
imentary. Abecedarian psalms, hymns, etc., compositions in which (like the 119th psalm in Hebrew) distinct portions or verses commence with successive letters of the alphabet. Hook.
ACROSTIC n.
A Hebrew poem in which the lines or stanzas begin with the letters of the alphabet in regular order (as Psalm cxix.). See Abecedarian. Double acrostic, a species of enigma, in which words are to be guessed whose initial and final letters form other words.
ADAR n.
The twelfth month of the Hebrew ecclesiastical year, and the sixth of the civil. It corresponded nearly with March.
ADONAI n.
A Hebrew name for God, usually translated in the Old Testament by the word "Lord".
ADONIST n.
One who maintains that points of the Hebrew word translated "Jehovah" are really the vowel points of the word "Adonai." See Jehovist.
ANTILEGOMENA n.
niversally received, but which are now considered canonical. These are the Epistle to the Hebrews, the Epistles of James and Jude, the second Epistle of Peter, the second and third Epistles of John, and the Revelation. The undisputed books are called the Homologoumena.
APOLLYON n.
royer; -- a name used (Rev. ix. 11) for the angel of the bottomless pit, answering to the Hebrew Abaddon.
BARACA n.
denominational organization of Bible classes of young men; -- so named in allusion to the Hebrew word Berachah (Meaning blessing) occurring in 2 Chron. xx. 26 and 1 Chron. xii.
BATH n.
A Hebrew measure containing the tenth of a homer, or five gallons and three pints, as a measure for liquids; and two pecks and five quarts, as a dry measure.
BEL n.
The Babylonian name of the god known among the Hebrews as Baal. See Baal. Baruch vi. 41.
CAB n.
A Hebrew dry measure, containing a little over two (2.37) pints. W. H. Ward. 2 Kings vi. 25.
CHERUBIM n.
The Hebrew plural of Cherub.. Cf. Seraphim.
CHRESTOMATHY n.
A selection of passages, with notes, etc., to be used in acquiring a language; as, a Hebrew chrestomathy.
CHRIST n.
The Anointed; an appellation given to Jesus, the Savior. It is synonymous with the Hebrew Messiah.
COLLATE v.

COR n.
A Hebrew measure of capacity; a homer. [Written also core.]
CORE n.
