DOLOMITE n.
A mineral consisting of the carbonate of lime and magnesia in varying proportions. It occurs in distinct crystals, and in extensive beds as a compact limestone, often crystalline granular, either white or clouded. It includes much of the common white marble. Also called bitter spar.
ANKERITE n.
A mineral closely related to dolomite, but containing iron.
BITTER SPAR n.
A common name of dolomite; -- so called because it contains magnesia, the soluble salts of which are bitter. See Dolomite.

rains. -- Pearl sinter (Min.), fiorite. -- Pearl spar (Min.), a crystallized variety of dolomite, having a pearly luster. -- Pearl white. (a) Basic bismuth nitrate, or bismuth subchloride; - - used chiefly as a cosmetic. (b) A variety of white lead blued with indigo or Berlin blue.
