ANTHRACENE n.
A solid hydrocarbon, C6H4.C2H2.C6H4, which accompanies naphthalene in the last stages of the distillation of coal tar. Its chief use is in the artificial production of alizarin. [Written also anthracin.]
ANTHRACENE OIL n.
ch distills over from coal tar at a temperature above 270º. It is the principal source of anthracene.
PARANTHRACENE n.
An inert isomeric modification of anthracene.
ALIZARIN n.
A coloring principle, C14H6O2(OH)2, found in madder, and now produced artificially from anthracene. It produces the Turkish reds.
ANTHRAQUINONE n.
rbon, C6H4.C2O2.C6H4, subliming in shining yellow needles. It is obtained by oxidation of anthracene.
CHRYSENE n.
One of the higher aromatic hydrocarbons of coal tar, allied to napthalene and anthracene. It is a white crystalline substance, C18H12, of strong blue fluorescence, but generally colored yellow by impurities.
CHRYSOGEN n.
A yellow crystalline substance extracted from crude anthracene.
CHRYSOPHANIC a.
from rhubarb, yellow dock, sienna, chrysarobin, etc., and shown to be a derivative of an anthracene. It is used in the treatment of skin diseases; -- called also rhein, rheic acid, rhubarbarin, etc.
PARANAPHTHALENE n.
Anthracene; -- called also paranaphthaline. [Obs.]
RUFIGALLIC a.
from gallic acid as a brown or red crystalline substance, and is related to rufiopin and anthracene.
RUFIOPIN n.
A yellowish red crystalline substance related to anthracene, and obtained from opianic acid.
RUFOL n.
A phenol derivative of anthracene obtained as a white crystalline substance, which on oxidation produces a red dyestuff related to anthraquinone.
