ALCEDO n.
A genus of perching birds, including the European kingfisher (Alcedo ispida). See Halcyon.

Chalcedony in parallel layers of different shades of color. It is used for making cameos, the figure being cut in one layer with the next as a ground. Onyx marble, a banded variety of marble or calcium carbonate resembling onyx. It is obtained from Mexico.

g gunpowder, in large cubical grains. -- Scotch pebble, varieties of quartz, as agate, chalcedony, etc., obtained from cavities in amygdaloid.
PLASMA n.
z, of a color between grass green and leek green, which is found associated with common chalcedony. It was much esteemed by the ancients for making engraved ornaments.

ariety of carnelian, of a rich reddish yellow or brownish red color. See the Note under Chalcedony.
