BIRD n.
a chicken; the young of a fowl; a young eaglet; a nestling; and hence, a feathered flying animal (see 2). That ungentle gull, the cuckoo's bird. Shak. The brydds [birds] of the aier have nestes. Tyndale (Matt. viii. 20).
BIRTH n.
That which is born; that which is produced, whether animal or vegetable. Poets are far rarer births that kings. B. Jonson. Others hatch their eggs and tend the birth till it is able to shift for itself. Addison.
BISEXUAL a.
Of both sexes; hermaphrodite; as a flower with stamens and pistil, or an animal having ovaries and testes.
BLACK n.
d white. -- Blue black, a pigment of a blue black color. -- Ivory black, a fine kind of animal charcoal prepared by calcining ivory or bones. When ground it is the chief ingredient of the ink used in copperplate printing. -- Berlin black. See under Berlin.
BLADDER n. 2 definitions
A bag or sac in animals, which serves as the receptacle of some fluid; as, the urinary bladder; the gall bladder; -- applied especially to the urinary bladder, either within the animal, or when taken out and inflated with air.
BLADDERWORT n.
ly bear numerous vesicles in the divisions of the leaves. These serve as traps for minute animals. See Ascidium.
BLAST n.
A sudden, pernicious effect, as if by a noxious wind, especially on animals and plants; a blight. By the blast of God they perish. Job iv. 9. Virtue preserved from fell destruction's blast. Shak.
BLOOD n.
The fluid which circulates in the principal vascular system of animals, carrying nourishment to all parts of the body, and bringing away waste products to be excreted. See under Arterial.
BLOOD VESSEL n.
Any vessel or canal in which blood circulates in an animal, as an artery or vein.
BLOODSUCKER n.
Any animal that sucks blood; esp., the leech (Hirudo medicinalis), and related species.
BLOWFLY n.
ca that deposits its eggs or young larvæ (called flyblows and maggots) upon meat or other animal products.
BLUBBER n.
The fat of whales and other large sea animals from which oil is obtained. It lies immediately under the skin and over the muscular flesh.
BOBTAIL n.
An animal (as a horse or dog) with a short tail. Rag, tag, and bobtail, the rabble.
BODY n. 2 definitions
The material organized substance of an animal, whether living or dead, as distinguished from the spirit, or vital principle; the physical person. Absent in body, but present in spirit. 1 Cor. v. 3 For of the soul the body form doth take. For soul is form, and doth the body make. Spenser.
