AGAMI n.
A South American bird (Psophia crepitans), allied to the cranes, and easily domesticated; -- called also the gold-breasted trumpeter. Its body is about the size of the pheasant. See Trumpeter.
AIR CELL n.
m; as, a cell or minute cavity in the walls of the air tubes of the lungs; the air sac of birds; a dilatation of the air vessels in insects.
AIR SAC n.
One of the spaces in different parts. of the bodies of birds, which are filled with air and connected with the air passages of the lungs; an air cell.
AIR VESSEL n.
vessel, cell, duct, or tube containing or conducting air; as the air vessels of insects, birds, plants, etc.; the air vessel of a pump, engine, etc. For the latter, see Air chamber. The air vessels of insects are called tracheæ, of plants spiral vessels.
ALBATROSS n.
A web-footed bird, of the genus Diomedea, of which there are several species. They are the largest of sea birds, capable of long- continued flight, and are often seen at great distances from the land. They are found chiefly in the southern hemisphere.
ALBUMININ n.
The substance of the cells which inclose the white of birds' eggs.
ALCEDO n.
A genus of perching birds, including the European kingfisher (Alcedo ispida). See Halcyon.
ALECTORIDES n.
A group of birds including the common fowl and the pheasants.
ALIGHT v.
To descend and settle, lodge, rest, or stop; as, a flying bird alights on a tree; snow alights on a roof.
ALLANTOIDEA n.
e division of Vertebrata in which the embryo develops an allantois. It includes reptiles, birds, and mammals.

The strawberry finch, a small Indian song bird (Estrelda amandava), commonly caged and kept for fighting. The female is olive brown; the male, in summer, mostly crimson; -- called also red waxbill. [Written also amaduvad and avadavat.]

A genus of birds, or one of this genus.
AMNION n.
A thin membrane surrounding the embryos of mammals, birds, and reptiles.
AMNIOTA n.
lops in its embryonic life the envelope called the amnion. It comprises the reptiles, the birds, and the mammals.
ANACONDA n.
merican snake of the Boa family (Eunectes murinus), which lives near rivers, and preys on birds and small mammals. The name is also applied to a similar large serpent (Python tigris) of Ceylon.
