RHIZODONT n.
A reptile whose teeth are rooted in sockets, as the crocodile.
RHYNCHOCEPHALA n.
An order of reptiles having biconcave vertebræ, immovable quadrate bones, and many other peculiar osteological characters. Hatteria is the only living genus, but numerous fossil genera are known, some of which are among the earliest of reptiles. See Hatteria. Called also Rhynchocephalia.
SAUROPSIDA n.
A comprehensive group of vertebrates, comprising the reptiles and birds.

A bony scale of a reptile or fish; a large horny scale on the leg of a bird, or on the belly of a snake.

. It has a powerful hooked beak, a crest of long feathers, and a long tail. It feeds upon reptiles of various kinds, and is much prized on account of its habit of killing and devouring snakes of all kinds. Called also serpent eater.
SEPTOMAXILLARY a.
A small bone between the nasal septum and the maxilla in many reptiles and amphibians.

Any reptile of the order Ophidia; a snake, especially a large snake. See Illust. under Ophidia.
SLOWWORM n.
A lecertilian reptile; the blindworm.
SUCHOSPONDYLOUS a.
Having dorsal vertebræ with long and divided transverse processes; -- applied to certain reptiles.
SUPRAOCULAR a.
Above the eyes; -- said of certain scales of fishes and reptiles.
SURANGULAR a.
Above the angular bone; supra-angular; -- applied to a bone of the lower jaw in many reptiles and birds. -- n.
TEGUEXIN n.
ckish above, marked with yellowish spots of various sizes. It feeds upon fruits, insects, reptiles, young birds, and birds' eggs. The closely allied species Tejus rufescens is called red teguexin.
TELEOSAUR n.
e of several species of fossil suarians belonging to Teleosaurus and allied genera. These reptiles are related to the crocodiles, but have biconcave vertebræ.
TELEOSAURUS n.
A genus of extinct crocodilian reptiles of the Jurassic period, having a long and slender snout.
TESTUDINATA n.
An order of reptiles which includes the turtles and tortoises. The body is covered by a shell consisting of an upper or dorsal shell, called the carapace, and a lower or ventral shell, called the plastron, each of which consists of several plates.
THERIODONTIA n.
An extinct order of reptiles found in the Permian and Triassic formations in South Africa. In some respects they resembled carnivorous mammals. Called also Theromorpha.
TORTOISE n.
Any one of numerous species of reptiles of the order Testudinata.
TRANSPALATINE a.
Situated beyond or outside the palatine bone; -- said of a bone in the skull of some reptiles.
