A native of Damaraland, German Southwest Africa. The Damaras include an important and warlike Bantu tribe, and the Hill Damaras, who are Hottentots and mixed breeds hostile to the Bantus.

A small fresh-water etheostomoid fish. The group includes numerous genera and species, all of them American. See Etheostomoid.

The division of Cephalopoda which includes the squids, cuttlefishes, and others having ten arms or tentacles; -- called also Decapoda. [Written also Decacera.] See Dibranchiata.

The order of Crustacea which includes the shrimps, lobsters, crabs, etc.
DEPTH n.
The number of simple elements which an abstract conception or notion includes; the comprehension or content.
DERMOPTERA n.
The division of insects which includes the earwigs (Forticulidæ).
DEROTREMATA n.
The tribe of aquatic Amphibia which includes Amphiuma, Menopoma, etc. They have permanent gill openings, but no external gills; -- called also Cryptobranchiata. [Written also Derotrema.]
DESMOMYARIA n.
The division of Tunicata which includes the Salpæ. See Salpa.
DEVONIAN a.
e of fishes. The various strata of this age compose the Devonian formation or system, and include the old red sandstone of Great Britain. They contain, besides plants and numerous invertebrates, the bony portions of many large and remarkable fishes of extinct groups. See the Diagram under Geology.
DIABASE n.
eldspar and pyroxene with magnetic iron; -- often limited to rocks pretertiary in age. It includes part of what was early called greenstone.
DIAPASON n.
The octave, or interval which includes all the tones of the diatonic scale.
