BLACKWOOD n.
name given to several dark-colored timbers. The East Indian black wood is from the tree Dalbergia latifolia. Balfour.
BLEA n.
The part of a tree which lies immediately under the bark; the alburnum or sapwood.
BLEAK n.
A small European river fish (Leuciscus alburnus), of the family Cyprinidæ; the blay. [Written also blick.]
BLESBOK n.
A South African antelope (Alcelaphus albifrons), having a large white spot on the forehead.
BOLE n.
entially of hydrous silicates of alumina, or more rarely of magnesia. See Clay, and Terra alba.
BRIGHT'S DISEASE n.
of the kidneys, usually inflammatory in character, and distinguished by the occurrence of albumin and renal casts in the urine. Several varieties of Bright's disease are now recognized, differing in the part of the kidney involved, and in the intensity and course of the morbid process.
BROWN BILL n.
A bill or halberd of the 16th and 17th centuries. See 4th Bill. Many time, but for a sallet, my brainpan had been cleft with a brown bill. Shak.
BRYONIN n.
A bitter principle obtained from the root of the bryony (Bryonia alba and B. dioica). It is a white, or slightly colored, substance, and is emetic and cathartic.
BRYONY n.
The common name of several cucurbitaceous plants of the genus Bryonia. The root of B. alba (rough or white bryony) and of B. dioica is a strong, irritating cathartic. Black bryony, a plant (Tamus communis) so named from its dark glossy leaves and black root; black bindweed.
BUFFEL DUCK n.
A small duck (Charitonetta albeola); the spirit duck, or butterball. The head of the male is covered with numerous elongated feathers, and thus appears large. Called also bufflehead.
BULLHEAD n.
water insect. E. Phillips. Bullhead whiting (Zoöl.), the kingfish of Florida (Menticirrus alburnus).
CAESAR n.
e, a kaiser, or emperor of Germany, or any emperor or powerful ruler. See Kaiser, Kesar. Malborough anticipated the day when he would be servilely flattered and courted by Cæsar on one side and by Louis the Great on the other. Macaulay.
CALOTYPE n.
taking photographic pictures, on paper sensitized with iodide of silver; -- also called Talbotype, from the inventor, Mr. Fox. Talbot.
CAPUCHIN n.
Other species of Cabus, as C. fatuellus (the brown or horned capucine.), C. albifrons (the cararara), and C. apella.
CASEIN n.
less abundantly in the seeds of leguminous plants. Its reactions resemble those of alkali albumin. [Written also caseine.]
CATHARIST n.
greater purity of like than others about him; -- applied to persons of various sects. See Albigenses.
CHALAZA n.
A spiral band of thickened albuminous substance which exists in the white of the bird's egg, and serves to maintain the yolk in its position; the treadle.
CINCTURE n.
t, a girdle, or something worn round the body, -- as by an ecclesiastic for confining the alb.
CLEAVELANDITE n.
A variety of albite, white and lamellar in structure.
COAGULATED a.
gulated proteid (Physiol. Chem.), one of a class of bodies formed in the coagulation of a albuminous substance by heat, acids, or other agents.
