BAROMETRY n.
The art or process of making barometrical measurements.
BASIC PROCESS n.
A Bessemer or open-hearth steel-making process in which a lining that is basic, or not siliceous, is used, and additions of basic material are made to the molten charge during treatment. Opposed to acid process, above. Called also Thomas process.
BASKETRY n.
The art of making baskets; also, baskets, taken collectively.
BASS n.
inden or lime tree, sometimes wrongly called whitewood; also, its bark, which is used for making mats. See Bast.
BATTING n.
Cotton in sheets, prepared for use in making quilts, etc.; as, cotton batting.
BEAM n.
A cylinder of wood, making part of a loom, on which weavers wind the warp before weaving; also, the cylinder on which the cloth is rolled, as it is woven; one being called the fore beam, the other the back beam.
BEAUMONTAGUE n.
A cement used in making joints, filling cracks, etc. For iron, the principal constituents are iron borings and sal ammoniac; for wood, white lead or litharge, whiting, and linseed oil.
BEAVER n.
Beaver cloth, a heavy felted woolen cloth, used chiefly for making overcoats. Beaver rat (Zoöl.), an aquatic ratlike quadruped of Tasmania (Hydromys chrysogaster). -- Beaver skin, the furry skin of the beaver. -- Bank beaver. See under 1st Bank.

different species and varieties of which are used for the table, for feeding stock, or in making sugar.

y or bronze, consisting usually of about three parts of copper to one of tin; -- used for making bells. Bell metal ore, a sulphide of tin, copper, and iron; the mineral stannite.

The quality of being belligerent; act or state of making war; warfare.
BENGAL n.
niter, sulphur, and antimony, and producing a sustained and vivid colored light, used in making signals and in pyrotechnics; -- called also blue light. -- Bengal stripes, a kind of cotton cloth woven with colored stripes. See Bengal, 3. -- Bengal tiger. (Zoöl.). See Tiger.
BENNE n.
called oil plant. From their seeds an oil is expressed, called benne oil, used mostly for making soap. In the southern United States the seeds are used in candy.

A making better; amendment; improvement. W. Montagu.
BICARBONATE n.
hich but half the hydrogen of the acid is replaced by a positive element or radical, thus making the proportion of the acid to the positive or basic portion twice what it is in the normal carbonates; an acid carbonate; -- sometimes called supercarbonate.
