A fish of the genus Upeneus, inhabiting the Gulf of Mexico. It is allied to the surmullet.

JEWFISH n. 4 definitions
A very large serranoid fish (Promicrops itaiara) of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. It often reaches the weight of five hundred pounds. Its color is olivaceous or yellowish, with numerous brown spots. Called also guasa, and warsaw.
KELPFISH n.
A small California food fish (Heterostichus rostratus), living among kelp. The name is also applied to species of the genus Platyglossus.
KILLIFISH n.
Any one of several small American cyprinodont fishes of the genus Fundulus and allied genera. They live equally well in fresh and brackish water, or even in the sea. They are usually striped or barred with black. Called also minnow, and brook fish. See Minnow.
