SLOUGHING n.
The act of casting off the skin or shell, as do insects and crustaceans; ecdysis.
SPERMATOPHORE n.
ng a number of spermatozoa. They are present in many annelids, brachiopods, mollusks, and crustaceans. In cephalopods the structure of the capsule is very complex.
SQUAME n.
The scale, or exopodite, of an antenna of a crustacean.
SQUILLA n.
Any one of numerous stomapod crustaceans of the genus Squilla and allied genera. They make burrows in mud or beneath stones on the seashore. Called also mantis shrimp. See Illust. under Stomapoda.
STALK n.
The peduncle of the eyes of decapod crustaceans.
STALK-EYED a.

The second joint of a maxilla of an insect or a crustacean.

A seam, or impressed line, as between the segments of a crustacean, or between the whorls of a univalve shell. Glover's suture, Harmonic suture, etc. See under Glover, Harmonic, etc.

sually bilobed, appendages, of which several pairs occur on the abdominal somites of many crustaceans. They are used as fins in swimming.
TARSUS n.
The foot of an insect or a crustacean. It usually consists of form two to five joints.

The second, or middle, region of the body of a crustacean, arachnid, or other articulate animal. In the case of decapod Crustacea, some writers include under the term thorax only the three segments bearing the maxillipeds; others include also the five segments bearing the legs.
