ADAMANTINE a.
Like the diamond in hardness or luster.
ADDUCE v.
adduced on both sides. Macaulay. Enough could not be adduced to satisfy the purpose of illustration. De Quincey.
ADELPHOUS a.
Having coalescent or clustered filaments; -- said of stamens; as, adelphous stamens. Usually in composition; as, monadelphous. Gray.

genus of plants, one species of which (A. Mexicanum) has lavender-blue flowers in dense clusters.

A brief, methodical illustration of the principles of a science. In this sense it is nearly synonymous with synopsis.

l lineage; hence, birth or honorable descent. Title and ancestry render a good man more illustrious, but an ill one more contemptible. Addison.

Bearing both staminiferous and pistilliferous flowers in the same cluster.

A division of nudibranchiate Mollusca, in which the gills form a wreath or cluster upon the posterior part of the back. See Nudibranchiata, and Doris.
ANTHOTAXY n.
The arrangement of flowers in a cluster; the science of the relative position of flowers; inflorescence.
ANTHRACITE n.
A hard, compact variety of mineral coal, of high luster, differing from bituminous coal in containing little or no bitumen, in consequence of which it burns with a nearly non luminous flame. The purer specimens consist almost wholly of carbon. Also called glance coal and blind coal.

microscopic, bacterial organism (Bacillus anthracis), resembling transparent rods. [See Illust. under Bacillus.]
