OSMATERIUM n.
One of a pair of scent organs which the larvæ of certain butterflies emit from the first body segment, either above or below.
OSPHRADIUM n.
The olfactory organ of some Mollusca. It is connected with the organ of respiration.
OSSEIN n.
The organic basis of bone tissue; the residue after removal of the mineral matters from bone by dilute acid; in embryonic tissue, the substance in which the mineral salts are deposited to form bone; -- called also ostein. Chemically it is the same as collagen.
OTOCYST n.
An auditory cyst or vesicle; one of the simple auditory organs of many invertebrates, containing a fluid and otoliths; also, the embryonic vesicle from which the parts of the internal ear of vertebrates are developed.
OTOLITH; OTOLITE n.
alcareous or other hard substance in the internal ear of vertebrates, and in the auditory organs of many invertebrates; an ear stone. Collectively, the otoliths are called ear sand and otoconite.

The organ with which many insects and some other animals deposit their eggs. Some ichneumon files have a long ovipositor fitted to pierce the eggs or larvæ of other insects, in order to lay their own eggs within the same.
OVISM n.
The old theory that the egg contains the whole embryo of the future organism and the germs of all subsequent offsprings and is merely awakened to activity by the spermatozoön; -- opposed to spermism or animalculism.
OVOTESTTIS n.
An organ which produces both ova and spermatozoids; an hermaphrodite gland.
