HAND n.
-- usually in the plural. "Receiving in hand one year's tribute." Knolles. Albinus . . . found means to keep in his hands the goverment of Britain. Milton.

equin snake (Zoöl.), a small, poisonous snake (Elaps fulvius), ringed with red and black, found in the Southern United States.
HARMALINE n.
An alkaloid found in the plant Peganum harmala. It forms bitter, yellow salts.
HARMONIST; HARMONITE n.
One of a religious sect, founded in Würtemburg in the last century, composed of followers of George Rapp, a weaver. They had all their property in common. In 1803, a portion of this sect settled in Pennsylvania and called the village thus established, Harmony.

HECDECANE n.
A white, semisolid, spermaceti-like hydrocarbon, C16H34, of the paraffin series, found dissolved as an important ingredient of kerosene, and so called because each molecule has sixteen atoms of carbon; -- called also hexadecane.
HELENIN n.
A neutral organic substance found in the root of the elecampane (Inula helenium), and extracted as a white crystalline or oily material, with a slightly bitter taste.
HELIOLITE n.
A fossil coral of the genus Heliolites, having twelve-rayed cells. It is found in the Silurian rocks.
HELIUM n.
A gaseous element found in the atmospheres of the sun and earth and in some rare minerals.
HELLEBORIN n.
A poisonous glucoside found in several species of hellebore, and extracted as a white crystalline substance with a sharp tingling taste. It possesses the essential virtues of the plant; -- called also elleborin.
HEMIONUS n.
A wild ass found in Thibet; the kiang. Darwin.
HEPTANE n.
so called because the molecule has seven carbon atoms. Specifically, a colorless liquid, found as a constituent of petroleum, in the tar oil of cannel coal, etc.
HERMAPHRODITE n.
hout the union of the distinct individuals. In the animal kingdom true hermaphrodites are found only among the invertebrates. See Illust. in Appendix, under Helminths.
HESPERIDIN n.
A glucoside found in ripe and unripe fruit (as the orange), and extracted as a white crystalline substance.
