TOXOGLOSSA n.
f marine gastropod mollusks in which the radula are converted into poison fangs. The cone shells (Conus), Pleurotoma, and Terebra, are examples. See Illust. of Cone, n., 4, Pleurotoma, and Terebra.
TRACHELIPODA n.
An extensive artificial group of gastropods comprising all those which have a spiral shell and the foot attached to the base of the neck.
TRIDACNA n.
A genus of very large marine bivalve shells found on the coral reefs of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. One species (T. gigas) often weighs four or five hundred pounds, and is sometimes used for baptismal fonts. Called also paw shell, and fountain shell.
TRIGONIA n.
A genus of pearly bivalve shells, numerous extinct species of which are characteristic of the Mesozoic rocks. A few living species exist on the coast of Australia.
TRIONYX n.
A genus of fresh-water or river turtles which have the shell imperfectly developed and covered with a soft leathery skin. They are noted for their agility and rapacity. Called also soft tortoise, soft-shell tortoise, and mud turtle.
TRIPOLI n.
Tripoli, used in polishing stones and metals. It consists almost wholly of the siliceous shells of diatoms.
