ELLAGIC a.
derived from, gallnuts or gallic acid; as, ellagic acid. Ellagic acid (Chem.), a white crystalline substance, C14H8O9, found in bezoar stones, and obtained by the oxidation of gallic acid.
EMERALD a.
te of copper; green bice; Scheele's green; -- also used adjectively; as, emerald green crystals. -- Emerald Isle, a name given to Ireland on account of the brightness of its verdure. -- Emerald spodumene, or Lithia emerald. (Min.) See Hiddenite. -- Emerald nickel. (Min.) See Zaratite.

A white crystalline bitter alkaloid extracted from ipecacuanha root, and regarded as its peculiar emetic principle.

ENSTATITE n.
A mineral of the pyroxene group, orthorhombic in crystallization; often fibrous and massive; color grayish white or greenish. It is a silicate of magnesia with some iron. Bronzite is a ferriferous variety.

ERYTHRIN; ERYTHRINE n.
A colorless crystalline substance, C20H22O10, extracted from certain lichens, as the various species of Rocella. It is a derivative of orsellinic acid. So called because of certain red compounds derived from it. Called also erythric acid.
