PALPIGER n.
That portion of the labium which bears the palpi in insects.
PALPUS n.
A feeler; especially, one of the jointed sense organs attached to the mouth organs of insects, arachnids, crustaceans, and annelids; as, the mandibular palpi, maxillary palpi, and labial palpi. The palpi of male spiders serve as sexual organs. Called also palp. See Illust. of Arthrogastra and Orthoptera.…

Producing ova only; -- said of the ovaries of certain insects which do not produce vitelligenous cells.
PANORPID n.
Any neuropterous insect of the genus Panorpa, and allied genera. The larvæ feed on plant lice.

A peculiar insectivore (Ptilocercus Lowii) of Borneo; -- so called from its very long, quill-shaped tail, which is scaly at the base and plumose at the tip.

That part of the integument of an insect which surrounds the spiracles.
PERLID n.
Any insect of the genus Perla, or family Perlidæ. See Stone fly, under Stone.

PHANEROGLOSSAL a.
Having a conspicious tongue; -- said of certain reptiles and insects.
PHASMID n.
Any orthopterous insect of the family Phasmidæ, as a leaf insect or a stick insect.
PHRYGANEID n.
Any insect belonging to the Phryganeides.
PHRYGANEIDES n.
A tribe of neuropterous insects which includes the caddice flies; -- called also Trichoptera. See Trichoptera. [Written also Phryganides.]
