MELANAEMIA n.
A morbid condition in which the blood contains black pigment either floating freely or imbedded in the white blood corpuscles.
NOSTOC n.
A genus of algæ. The plants are composed of moniliform cells imbedded in a gelatinous substance.
OPHIOMORPHA n.
having a slender, wormlike body with regular annulations, and usually with minute scales imbedded in the skin. The limbs are rudimentary or wanting. It includes the cæcilians. Called also Gymnophiona and Ophidobatrachia.
PASTE n.
The mineral substance in which other minerals are imbedded. Paste eel (Zoöl.), the vinegar eel. See under Vinegar.

SAGENITE n.
Acicular rutile occurring in reticulated forms imbedded in quartz.
STAUROLITE n.
groups resembling a cross. It is a silicate of aluminia and iron, and is generally found imbedded in mica schist. Called also granatite, and grenatite.
SYNCYTIUM n.
ether, so that the tissue consists of a continuous mass of protoplasm in which nuclei are imbedded, as in ordinary striped muscle.
SYSTEM n.
One of the stellate or irregular clusters of intimately united zooids which are imbedded in, or scattered over, the surface of the common tissue of many compound ascidians. Block system, Conservative system, etc. See under Block, Conservative, etc.
TROILITE n.
Native iron protosulphide, FeS. It is known only in meteoric irons, and is usually in imbedded nodular masses of a bronze color.
VARIOLITE n.
A kind of diorite or diabase containing imbedded whitish spherules, which give the rock a spotted appearance.
WARWICKITE n.
A dark brown or black mineral, occurring in prismatic crystals imbedded in limestone near Warwick, New York. It consists of the borate and titanate of magnesia and iron.

ZOOGLOEA; ZOOEGLOEA n.
A colony or mass of bacteria imbedded in a viscous gelatinous substance. The zoögloea is characteristic of a transitory stage through which rapidly multiplying bacteria pass in the course of their evolution. Also used adjectively.
