The board used in the game of chess, having eight rows of alternate light and dark squares, eight in each row. See Checkerboard.

A narrow board, thicker at one edge than at the other; -- used for weatherboarding the outside of houses. [U. S.]

A movable sideboard or buffet, on which plate and other articles of luxury were displayed on special ocasions. [Obs.] A way with the joint stools, remove the court-cupboard, look to the plate. Shak.

A board placed on the fore part of a carriage, sleigh, or other vechicle, to intercept water, mud, or snow, thrown up by the heels of the horses; -- in England commonly called splashboard.

A checkered board on which draughts are played. See Checkerboard.

The part of a plow, or other implement, that turns over the earth; the moldboard.

The base of a window casing, on which the elbows may rest.

A chimney board or screen to close a fireplace when not in use.

A board placed temporarily upon a milldam, to raise the water in the pond above its usual level; a flushboard. [U.S.]

A board or narrow platfrom upon which one may stand or brace his feet; as:

One of the planks next the keel on the outside, which form a garboard strake. Garboard strake or streak, the first range or strake of planks laid on a ship's bottom next the keel. Totten.

A board, as upon a guidepost having upon it directions or information as to the road. Lowell.

A board or boarding which marks or forms the head of anything; as, the headboard of a bed; the headboard of a grave.

Inside the line of a vessel's bulwarks or hull; the opposite of outboard; as, an inboard cargo; haul the boom inboard.

The whole arrangement, or one range, of the keys of an organ, typewriter, etc.

A board on which knives are cleaned or polished.

A board used on the lap as a substitute for a table, as by tailors.

The left-hand side of a ship to one on board facing toward the bow; port; -- opposed to Ant: starboard.
