SLATER n.
Any terrestrial isopod crustacean of the genus Porcellio and allied genera; a sow bug.
SLOUGHING n.
The act of casting off the skin or shell, as do insects and crustaceans; ecdysis.
SPERM WHALE n.
can coast. Called also snub-nosed cachalot. -- Sperm-whale porpoise (Zoöl.), a toothed cetacean (Hyperoödon bidens), found on both sides of the Atlantic and valued for its oil. The adult becomes about twenty-five feet long, and its head is very large and thick. Called also bottle-nosed whale.

The scale, or exopodite, of an antenna of a crustacean.

The second joint of a maxilla of an insect or a crustacean.
STOMAPODA n.
An order of Crustacea including the squillas. The maxillipeds are leglike in form, and the large claws are comblike. They have a large and elongated abdomen, which contains a part of the stomach and heart; the abdominal appendages are large, and bear the gills. Called also Gastrula, Stomatopoda, and Squilloidea.…

A kind of sirup made by the Indians of Arizona from the fruit of some cactaceous plant (probably the Cereus giganteus).

A seam, or impressed line, as between the segments of a crustacean, or between the whorls of a univalve shell. Glover's suture, Harmonic suture, etc. See under Glover, Harmonic, etc.
SWIMMERET n.
ly bilobed, appendages, of which several pairs occur on the abdominal somites of many crustaceans. They are used as fins in swimming.
TARSUS n.
The foot of an insect or a crustacean. It usually consists of form two to five joints.
TELSON n.
The terminal joint or movable piece at the end of the abdomen of Crustacea and other articulates. See Thoracostraca.
TESTICOND a.
Having the testicles naturally concealed, as in the case of the cetaceans.
THALASSINIAN n.
Any species of Thalaassinidæ, a family of burrowing macrurous Crustacea, having a long and soft abdomen.
