HESSIAN a.
terous fly or midge (Cecidomyia destructor). Its larvæ live between the base of the lower leaves and the stalk of wheat, and are very destructive to young wheat; -- so called from the erroneous idea that it was brought into America by the Hessian troops, during the Revolution.

Having leaves of more than one shape on the same plant.

Having six leaves or leaflets.
HOLLY n.
the genus Ilex. The European species (Ilex Aguifolium) is best known, having glossy green leaves, with a spiny, waved edge, and bearing berries that turn red or yellow about Michaelmas.

same direction; -- said of stems twining round a support, or of the spiral succession of leaves on stems and their branches.

A sweet, saccharine substance, found on the leaves of trees and other plants in small drops, like dew. Two substances have been called by this name; one exuded from the plants, and the other secreted by certain insects, esp. aphids.

A soft covering for the head, worn by women, which leaves only the face exposed.

An aquatic plant (Ceratophyllum), with finely divided leaves.

A biennial weed (Cynoglossum officinale), with soft tongue- shaped leaves, and an offensive odor. It bears nutlets covered with barbed or hooked prickles. Called also dog's-tongue.
HYDRANGEA n.
A genus of shrubby plants bearing opposite leaves and large heads of showy flowers, white, or of various colors. H. hortensis, the common garden species, is a native of China or Japan.
HYGRINE n.
An alkaloid associated with cocaine in coca leaves (Erythroxylon coca), and extracted as a thick, yellow oil, having a pungent taste and odor.
HYOSCYAMUS n.
The leaves of the black henbane (Hyoscyamus niger), used in neuralgic and pectorial troubles.
HYPERICUM n.
A genus of plants, generally with dotted leaves and yellow flowers; -- called also St. John's-wort.
HYSON n.
A fragrant kind of green tea. Hyson skin, the light and inferior leaves separated from the hyson by a winnowing machine. M'Culloch.
HYSSOP n.
A plant (Hyssopus officinalis). The leaves have an aromatic smell, and a warm, pungent taste.

Having the leaves expand after the flowers have opened. Henslow.
ILIXANTHIN n.
A yellow dye obtained from the leaves of the holly.
