The sliding block or support, in a lathe, which carries the dead spindle, or adjustable center. The headstock supports the live spindle.

An entailment or deed whereby the legal course of succession is cut off, and an arbitrary one substituted. [Written also tailzee.]
TEETER-TAIL n.
The spotted sandpiper. See the Note under Sandpiper.
TENAILLE n.
An outwork in the main ditch, in front of the curtain, between two bastions. See Illust. of Ravelin.
TENAILLON n.
A work constructed on each side of the ravelins, to increase their strength, procure additional ground beyond the ditch, or cover the shoulders of the bastions.

THIRD-RAIL SYSTEM n.
A system in which a third rail is used for carrying the current for operating the motors, the rail being insulated from the ground and the current being taken off by means of contact brushes or other devices.
THORNTAIL n.
A beautiful South American humming bird (Gouldia Popelairii), having the six outer tail feathers long, slender, and pointed. The head is ornamented with a long, pointed crest.
TIRAILLEUR n.
Formerly, a member of an independent body of marksmen in the French army. They were used sometimes in front of the army to annoy the enemy, sometimes in the rear to check his pursuit. The term is now applied to all troops acting as skirmishers.
TOPSAIL n.
In a square-rigged vessel, the sail next above the lowermost sail on a mast. This sail is the one most frequently reefed or furled in working the ship.
