MUSCLE n.
The contractile tissue of which muscles are largely made up.
MYELIN n.
One of a group of phosphorized principles occurring in nerve tissue, both in the brain and nerve fibers.
MYOHAEMATIN n.
A red-colored respiratory pigment found associated with hemoglobin in the muscle tissue of a large number of animals, both vertebrate and invertebrate.
MYOMA n.
A tumor consisting of muscular tissue.

A substance, resembling keratin, present in nerve tissue, as in the sheath of the axis cylinder of medullated nerve fibers. Like keratin it resists the action of most chemical agents, and by decomposition with sulphuric acid yields leucin and tyrosin.
NITROGEN n.
as ammonia, nitric acid, the cyanides, etc, and is a constituent of all organized living tissues, animal or vegetable. Symbol N. Atomic weight 14. It was formerly regarded as a permanent noncondensible gas, but was liquefied in 1877 by Cailletet of Paris, and Pictet of Geneva.

An incipient ovule of soft cellular tissue.

A swelling from effusion of watery fluid in the cellular tissue beneath the skin or mucous membrance; dropsy of the subcutaneous cellular tissue. [Written also edema.]

Capable of being organized; esp. (Biol.), capable of being formed into living tissue; as, organizable matter.
ORGANOPLASTIC a.
Having the property of producing the tissues or organs of animals and plants; as, the organoplastic cells.

the heaviest substance known. Its tetroxide is used in histological experiments to stain tissues. Symbol Os. Atomic weight 191.1. Specific gravity 22.477.
OSSEIN n.
The organic basis of bone tissue; the residue after removal of the mineral matters from bone by dilute acid; in embryonic tissue, the substance in which the mineral salts are deposited to form bone; -- called also ostein. Chemically it is the same as collagen.
OSSIFIC a.
Capable of producing bone; having the power to change cartilage or other tissue into bone.
