DANAIDE n.
A water wheel having a vertical axis, and an inner and outer tapering shell, between which are vanes or floats attached usually to both shells, but sometimes only to one.
DARIOLE n.
A shell or cup of pastry filled with custard, whipped cream, crushed macaroons, etc.
DECOLLATED a.
Decapitated; worn or cast off in the process of growth, as the apex of certain univalve shells.
DELTHYRIS n.
A name formerly given to certain Silurian brachiopod shells of the genus Spirifer. Delthyris limestone (Geol.), one of the divisions of the Upper Silurian rocks in New York.
DELTIDIUM n.
The triangular space under the beak of many brachiopod shells.

Right, as opposed to sinistral, or left. Dextral shell (Zoöl.), a spiral shell the whorls of which turn from left right, or like the hands of a watch when the apex of the spire is toward the eye of the observer.

A calcareous plate which divides the cavity of certain shells into two parts.
DISCINA n.
A genus of Branchiopoda, having a disklike shell, attached by one valve, which is perforated by the peduncle.
DISCLOSE v.

DISCOID a. 2 definitions
Having the form of a disk, as those univalve shells which have the whorls in one plane, so as to form a disk, as the pearly nautilus. Discoid flower (Bot.), a compound flower, consisting of tubular florets only, as a tansy, lacking the rays which are seen in the daisy and sunflower.

DISK n.
In owls, the space around the eyes. Disk engine, a form of rotary steam engine. -- Disk shell (Zoöl.), any species of Discina.
DISLODGE v.
To drive from a lodge or place of rest; to remove from a place of quiet or repose; as, shells resting in the sea at a considerate depth are not dislodged by storms.
DIVARICATOR n.
One of the muscles which open the shell of brachiopods; a cardinal muscle. See Illust. of Brachiopoda.
