OPERCULATE; OPERCULATED a.
Having an operculum, or an apparatus for protecting the gills; -- said of shells and of fishes.
ORRERY n.
An apparatus which illustrates, by the revolution of balls moved by wheelwork, the relative size, periodic motions, positions, orbits, etc., of bodies in the solar system.
OSCILLATOR n.
Any device for producing electric oscillations; esp., an apparatus for generating electric waves in a system of wireless telegraphy.

An apparatus for multiplying writings, drawings, etc., in which a paper stencil, formed by writing or drawing with corrosive ink, is used. The word is also used of other means of multiplying copies of writings, drawings, etc. See Copygraph, Hectograph, Manifold.
PASTEURIZER n.
One that Pasteurizes, specif. an apparatus for heating and agitating, fluid.
PATTERN n.
. (a) A set of samples on a card. (b) (Weaving) One of the perforated cards in a Jacquard apparatus. -- Pattern reader, one who arranges textile patterns. -- Pattern wheel (Horology), a count-wheel.
PERAMBULATOR n.
asuring distances. It consists of a wheel arranged to roll along over the ground, with an apparatus of clockwork, and a dial plate upon which the distance traveled is shown by an index. See Odometer.

The apparatus by which such an effect is produced.

for observing or exhibiting the motions or properties of sounding bodies; especially, an apparatus invented by König for testing the quality of musical strings.

An apparatus for observing the phosphorescence produced in different bodies by the action of light, and for measuring its duration.
PHOTO-ELECTRIC a.
Acting by the operation of both light and electricity; -- said of apparatus for producing pictures by electric light.
PHOTODROME n.
An apparatus consisting of a large wheel with spokes, which when turning very rapidly is illuminated by momentary flashes of light passing through slits in a rotating disk. By properly timing the succession of flashes the wheel is made to appear to be motionless, or to rotate more or less slowly in either direction.…
