Discuss Psalms 92

    Hi Jesse,

    Part 1

If I may add a few points to this subject, I know we have different understandings on this and I hope you will not be offended, these are questions I have asked myself. What does Scripture support, our soul is an immortal entity that consciously lives on after the death of the body or does it sleep in the grave until the resurrection? Is the definition of death a separation of the soul from the body or is it the end of life, a permanent cessation, and the grave is our home until we are resurrected?

John 3:15-16 Without the belief in Jesus we will perish the Greek word apollumi means destroy utterly, to put out of the way entirely, abolish as in Psalms 37:10 Psalms 92:7 Proverbs 10:28-29 Job 20:4-7 Malachi 4:1-3 2 Peter 2:12.

Matthew 10:28 we are to fear the one who can destroy the body and the soul in hell, the Greek word for destroy is apollumi same as perish, a permanent/absolute destruction. Hell, the Greek word is geenna the fire and smoke that goes up and burns forever that never goes out is a reference to the lake of fire. Job 17:13 the Hebrew word sheol is the same word translated as hell. Job 17:16 the word pit is the same Hebrew word.

Our first death is sleep, Psalms 13:3 Daniel 12:2 Acts 13:36 1 Cor. 15:51. If all souls are immortal which means they have eternal life, the question must be asked, what is the gift of eternal life we see in John 3:15 John 6:54 Romans 6:23 Titus 1:2 1 John 2:25 Jude 1:21? If our soul is immortal, why do we have to put immortality on as said in 1 Corinthians 15:51-58?

    Hi Daruled,

We cannot say Satan made me do it, we are responsible if we sin.

What is death? Is it just the body that dies and our conscious soul, lives on somewhere outside the body? This started when the serpent said to Eve, Ye shall not surely die, you will be as gods. Most pagan religions have an afterlife where the soul lives forever. In the Bible, the OT is the word Sheol meaning the grave and death was sleep with no knowledge or consciousness, nowhere is the immortal soul in the Bible.

When Adam and Eve sinned, they were taken out of the garden and forbidden eternal life/immortality from the Tree of Life, Gen. 3:24. When the OT was translated into Greek Sheol became Hades with the Greek meaning that came with it, and in English, it's Hell with the same Greek meaning, the soul separates from the body and the conscious souls goes to a place of the dead. Many believe there is either eternal life with Jesus or eternal damnation in Hell/lake of fire where they will be tormented for eternity.

If we say our soul is immortal, we are saying we are gods because we cannot die. But the Bible says without the gift of eternal life given to us in the resurrection we will die the second death, we will perish, be destroyed forever to be no more. Romans 6:23 Psalms 37:10-13 Psalms 92:7 Proverbs 10:25, 29 John 3:16 2 Peter 2:10-12, they are mortal and will perish.

The unrighteous will be destroyed/perish, they will have their part in the lake of fire, Rev. 21:8. Their death is forever, not forever in torment. When we die our destiny is fixed, there is not a second chance after death. This adoption of the Greek philosophy of the immortal soul and Hades fogs our understanding, it plugs our ears that are to hear.

I could say more but I will leave it here, I hope you will study for the truth. We should empty our minds in prayer where we are open to the truth given by the Spirit of Truth, not led by the traditions of men, Colossians 2:8.

I like to tell stories like Jesus did. There are many to choose from.

    1. Noah and the Ark

    2. The Tower of Babel. How the Godhead (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) confused the languages. What Nimrod did with the tower.

    3. Gideon. How he arose from being a coward and became a mighty general of God. His men lapped water like dogs and kept their armor on, and eyes looking for enemies. As in Don't get distracted.

    4. Ruth and Naomi and how Naomi brought her and Boaz together.

    5. How Queen Esther saved the nation of Israel. How she won and kept her husbands heart close to her. Defeated her enemies.

    6. King David's humble beginnings as a shepherd boy that played a musical instrument.

    7. Deborah who was a judge over Israel. Sometimes God uses a woman to lead a nation.

I'd get a highlighter marker and mark those passages in a special color, so you can just flip through the Bible. I learned to follow Jesus by what other people in the Bible did. Clearly you can see what is right and what Is the wrong way.

One day I was reading Ezekiel 37. The Holy Spirit nailed me in verse 3, concerning the messes and disasters in my life! I was gifted at it. He says can these bones live? Take a side trip to Ezekiel 12. Back to 37. He tells me to prophesy to the bones of my failures. I followed His leading and my dead hopes lived again.

Your niece can learn, that mistakes and bad judgement don't have to be fatal__dried out sun-baked bones. :)

I love of the story of the donkey that spoke.

And Peter walking on water, then he sees the waves and starts to sink. Like us when we see problems mount up like tsunamis in our lives. Peace, be still_in Jesus Name.

Just show her how we found deliverance and direction in the scriptures!

Memorizing scriptures is ok; but it is stories we hear that grow fast roots.

Donna, that sounds like a good plan for your granddaughter. Perhaps right down her questions as you go along. some may be answered in subsequent chapters, but some you will just need to explain in your own words. We are given intelligence to do just that.-explain spiritual truths to those who inquire in age appropriate ways. Bless you for having this opportunity with your dear granddaughter. May you both be blessed as you discover more of Jesus together.

I'm not sure if you are planning Psalm 92 as a specific study. It contains impreccatory prayer and a statement on the eternal state of the lost.

What I would think you would consider; is where she is at in seeking truth. Perhaps; she is trying to understand at this age what is going on approaching adolesdence or the age of accountability. Hopefully; she has parents (if they are raising her) which are not teaching her antithetical knowledge against scripture. Also; the conditioning of youth also is toward a self-destructive narcissistic atheistic (really Satanic) lifestyle. With that barrier covered; there hopefully can be a scientific viewpoint that is open to subjects like Job (and the creation); the book of Genesis; etc. There are Christians which have good arguments on that subject. The gospels and such certainly will provide a basis for teaching scripture; but if she isn't seeking the basic understanding of salvation (not sure where she is at with that); I certainly wouldn't be overly constraining as to what scriptures she goes to. Of course; we have the reality of the Resurrection and plan of salvation. There needs at some point to be an understanding (perhaps a good concordance or commentary) to put cross references together so the scripture (O.T. and N.T) are seen to be cohesive and inspired. There certainly is much wisdom in Proverbs and Psalms; and interesting historical narratives througout the Word.

A major concern of those such as Akaiane who is one of the top 10 artists (once she was say 5 or 6 years old) but although she paints Christ clearly she is New Age in her viewpoints. I thought I should warn as that is endemic with youth; and the enemy will use that curiousity to try to seduce many away from the pure truth of the Word. Ephesians 6 I would HIGHLY implore you to go over. If the Lord wants her to be a spiritual warrior; there is no point beating around the bush. Agape; RIch Priday

Hi Rosa. The word 'horn' that you read in some Psalms (e.g. Psalms 92:10; 132:17; 18:2; etc), usually have reference to the horn of the unicorn (or, wild ox). I usually picture a rhinocerous in these instances & the power that this beast holds against most all land animals. So the meanings associated with 'horn', can be various, but certainly, one could use, 'power, strength, dignity' in those verses. But in Psalm 75:5, for example, it denotes 'one that is arrogant or haughty'. Keep these words in mind as you re-read those Psalms.

Kay, is it your faith, or Christ faith: that has been given to you. If it's is his faith then it has to be HIS WORKS also.

Psalms 92:4 For thou Lord, has made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands.

Psalms 92:3 O Lord, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep.

Psalms 92:4 A brutish man knoweth not, nor doeth a fool understand this.

Revelation 2:26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth MY WORKS unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations.

Revelation 2:27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.

Kay, we died on the cross, the life now in us is Christ.

Colossians 1:27 .... this mystery.... CHRIST IN YOU....

Philippians 2:13 For it is God (CHRIST IN YOU) that WORKETH IN YOU both TO WILL and TO DO his good pleasure.

We are the body of Christ.

Psalms 104:30 Thou (Father) sendeth forth thy Spirit (Christ in you), they are created, thou renewest the face of the earth (with son's of God).

Romans 8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creature WAITETH for the manifestation of the Sons of God.

Romans 8:21 Because the creature itself shall be DELIVERED from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

Hi dear "MoniqueJ", first of all: All the gifts of God are good. In Forgiveness, in the Lord's prayer, for example, we ask and leave our debtors. It is healing. And in the Light that has cast out all darkness, there is healing in it. Jesus Is the Light of the World. Imagine when the Apostles received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost: Acts 2:4, Ephesians 3:14-21 Then they all got a huge extra power. They all understood that. Jesus had said to them: Luke 9:1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. It is not so of the human heart, but of the Holy Spirit who moved in by faith in Jesus.

Believe for your own sake, John 14:11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

Imagine the grace we have experienced and begin to know the Lord here on Earth! It constantly overwhelms me

"Just a beginner at age 49"

I think of Jesus saying " you must be born again" John 3:5-8, 1 Peter 1:21-23,

Recently I realized for some of us, we had to learn to talk, walk, dress & behave differently. For me, I'm glad it was put into the "born again " perspective because it takes time & as we learn to be that "New" creation, 2 Corinthians 5:17, there is patience as with a newborn babe, maybe that's why we're referred to as children 1 John 3:1-7, keep reading.

Hopefully these are encouraging, insightful & useful.

    Corine:

Exodus 35:3 You shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.

Do you turn off all the heat Friday evening at sundown, that's when the sabbath starts, until Saturday evening at sundown when the sabbath ends. Surely you don't turn your stove on to cook or make coffee or toast bread.

Leviticus 16:31 It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, and you shall AFFLICT YOUR SOULS, by a statute forever,

Do you keep the sabbath to the LETTER, there is several hundred statues included in the sabbath.

Exodus 35:2 Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you a Holy day, a sabbath or rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put TO DEATH.

Do you really want to live under the LETTER OF THE LAW, or the LAW OF GRACE.

CHRIST IS OUR SABBATH, IN HIM we REST (are put to death) from OUR WORKS.

Brother Rick, what do you believe is God's definition of GRACE and MERCY.

Are you not saved by God's works. Do you believe you have any part in your salvation.

God's word says it's all his works and none of our own ( Psalms 92:4-6)

We ALL KILLED CHRIST, yet he FORGAVE US and SAVED US.

Why wouldn't his grace and mercy extent to all MURDERERS, does the number of people one kills make one more guilty. David killed numerous, yet God said he was a man after his own heart.

David was a VESSEL, CHOSEN to fulfill the WORK'S of GOD, a vessel of honour, other are CHOSEN to fulfill the WORK's of God by being vessels of dishonour,

All is of GOD. God WILL SAVED the vessels of dishonour also, because they had no choice in GOD'S PURPOSE for creation.

Those that are saying LORD, LORD, DID WE NOT, are the ones that did't believe ALL WORKS are of GOD, we are just the axe in the hand of the Lord. ( Isaiah 10:15)

ALL God's desires and thoughts will COME TO PASS.

That sounds like a great ministry Helen, putting up Scriptures with music on the Web. I would think that you would be quite safe to add those italicized words as well, as with words put into music, generally affords one much license, which no one should object to. May the Lord use your efforts & give you wisdom in bringing it all together.

Hello, let me explain something important about translations. Let's say you're translating a phrase from Spanish to English: quiero burrito = I want a burrito. One has 2 words, the other 4 words and both mean the same thing. The equivalent italics here would be [I] and [a] as in [I] want [a] burrito, because those are used to complete the translation to make it grammatically correct, without it, it not a proper translation into that language.

If I say "Want burrito" you might think that sounds strange and incorrect, because it is. So, someone accusing someone of 'adding' to the Bible is false and shows a lack of understanding as they are actually making the translation correct. The italics showing which words completed the translation is only a convenience to those using greek concordances and strongs, and things with literal word for word translations.
  • Helen - In Reply on Psalms 92 - 2 years ago
    Thanks Chris!

I'm working on a website putting musical scriptures in it - and b/c I ran across KJV Bibles that

did not have italics and then found this site - I was afraid to put the scriptures up until I had a better understanding.

You make a great point about the italicized words offering more meaning.

    God bless you,

    Helen

Thanks for coming back, Helen. I would say that in almost all cases, taking the verse with those added words ("It is a" & "thing") should be quite acceptable for us. Why? Because it gives the sentence a meaning that is familiar to us. Of course, if we were proficient in Hebrew, as another brother Jesse who comes on here regularly, who is very learned in Greek & sheds much light to us on verses & Grecian thinking & expressions, then the whole language may well take on a different meaning & appreciation that we can sometimes miss out on.

But in my attempt to ensure that I'm not losing out on something important in a verse, I often refer to the original language & its lexicons or word translations, to see the different uses of the words in that verse & elsewhere. Or else, you can purchase an Interlinear Bible, or to a (free) Bible Study site, such as Bible Hub, & check out your verses at their Interlinear tab. But remember to read Hebrew texts (with their English counterparts below) from right to left.

But if "italics are not included" as you ask, then you can take some sample verses & test them against the Hebrew/Greek languages at Bible Hub & see whether the translators have done a good job in faithfully communicating the words from the original, or if they snuck in a word or two, ask, has it made any difference to the intended meaning? Ideally, as I wrote before, to know the original languages ourselves, would be the best way to understand & fully test the veracity of Scriptures, but most of us have not that ability.

    Hello ChrIs,

Thanks! I thought I remembered hearing that once.

So what do you think when the italics are not included?

Does it seem like people are adding to the Scripture unintentionally

    to you?

    Thanks Mishael!

I use the KJV too. I have several - but was using it from the online King James Bible since I was putting

scriptures on a website and wanted to make sure I did it accurately.

    Thanks for responding!

I was hoping you'd drop in and tell us what that meant :)

I checked my KJV Bible and it's not slanted at all.

Could be the publisher did it that way, or this website. What is your Bible version that you use? My publisher is Thomas Nelson/Nashville
  • Chris - In Reply on Psalms 92 - 2 years ago
Yes Helen, "It is a" & "thing" are all italicized because those four words don't appear in Hebrew, from which the translation was made. If you read it in Hebrew, it would read, "The Sabbath good to give thanks Yahweh and to sing praises to Your name Most High". So, the translators needed to add those extra words, to give it sense in English.
  • Helen on Psalms 92 - 2 years ago
In Psalm 92:1 it looks like "a" is italicized in "It is a good thing"

    Is that correct?

    thanks
